Each year the Onin Group invests $1,000 in the education of ten of our teammates and their family members through our Endeavor Scholarship. Onin is in the business of creating careers, so helping teammates and their families achieve their educational pursuits is important to us because education has the powerful potential to create greater opportunities that can lead to career advancements.

We know our teammates’ talents, interests, dreams and career goals are as diverse and inspiring as they are. Luckily education opportunities come in many forms as well, which is why the Endeavor Scholarship can be used for educational ventures ranging from attending a taditional college, to pursuing skilled trades at a vocational school, to completing certification courses.

Many of our teammates have acquired experience in the light industrial field already. Those interested in advancing their careers in the light industrial field can use the Endeavor scholarship to pursue skilled trades training by attending trade or vocational school where graduates earn a post-secondary degree and acquire technical skills and job-specific training. These degrees typically take one to two years to attain.

Here are some examples of in-demand skilled trades teammates and their families can pursue using the Endeavor Scholarship:

1. Machinists

What they do:Machinists set up computer and mechanically controlled machine tools to make precision metal parts in machine shops, tool rooms and factories.
Job Outlook: projected to grow 6% from 2014 to 2024
Median Annual Wage: $42,110 per year

2. Electrician

What they do:Electricians install, repair and maintain electrical power, lighting and control systems in homes, businesses and factories.
Job Outlook: projected to grow 14 percent from 2014 to 2024
Median Annual Wage: $51,880 per year

3. Welder

What they do:Welders use equipment to join or cut metal parts, fill holes, create indentations and seams for metal products.
Job Outlook: projected to grow four percent from 2014 to 2024
Median Annual Wage: $38,150 per year

4. Plumber

What they do:Plumbers install and repair pipes carrying liquids or gasses inside and between different facilities like businesses, homes, and factories.
Job Outlook: projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024
Median Annual Wage: $50,620 per year

5. Masoner

What they do:Masoners use a variety of materials, such as bricks, concrete and stones to build structures such as walls, walkways, fences.
Job Outlook: projected grow 15 percent from 2014 to 2024
Median Annual Wage: $39,640 per year

A variety of skilled trades are in high-demand and crucial to the U.S. economy, but dominated by the soon to retire baby boomer generation. Many fear a rapidly growing skills gap will develop and employers will continue to struggle when hiring qualified applicants to fill jobs which require meticulous training.
